There are lots of exhibitions and events funded by the Engaging Science Awards that are still on throughout December – and it’s your last chance to see some of these fantastic projects!

Shuffle Festival

Winter Shuffle Festival, 5th-15th December. Danny Boyle’s Shuffle Festival returns for winter with an extended arts and science programme looking at seasons, light, and the scientific side of traditional Christmas stories. Held in the disused Victorian psychiatric hospital, St Clement’s in east London highlights include Creation Myths and Virgin Births (Saturday 7th December) - a talk by geneticist Dr Aarathi Prasad, with Dr Amy Sanders of the Wellcone Trust. Geneticist Dr Prasad delves into scientific explanations of weird birth stories from history, then uses them to explore the future possibility of virgin births: those that do not involve men at all and the Sub-Zero Science Lecture: Antarctica (Sunday 8th December) - Jo Arendt will talk about the delights and problems of travelling to, and living on a remote base in Antarctica and discuss her research into the effects of the light environment on sleep and human rhythms. See the full Shuffle Festival programme for more.

Stories and Cures: Illness and the Art of Medicine Joanna Geyer Kordesch is a writer, poet and historian. Joanna was due to present her most recent project, supported by a People Award, at the Scottish International Storytelling Festival, when she suffered a severe stroke. This documentary explores Joanna’s personal story in line with her pioneering explorations of medicine as a humane art, connecting with culture and philosophy.

Mess Josephine is putting on a play – Boris and Sistahl help. It’s about anorexia – but don’t let that put you off. Unflinchingly they confront big issues (and extremely tiny ones). And today they will tackle a particularly thin elephant in the room. Mess is funded by a Small Arts Award and the tour ends on 6th December at King’s College London.

Madge Gill: Medium and Visionary This exhibition of over 100 artworks by Madge Gill (1882-1961) continues at Orleans House Gallery until 26th January 2014. There are a number of events to go with the exhibition – see the gallery site for details.

Alasdair Hopwood’s False Memory Archive Hopwood’s collection of false and distorted memories will be at the Exchange Gallery, Penzance until 4th January, with accompanying talks. You can see the project website for more info or to submit a false memory…

Matters of Life and Death at Arnos Vale Cemetery in Bristol This series of medical talks continues, following the story from ancient disease to modern medical campaigns, and revealing gruesome and gripping facts along the way. Find out more from their events calendar.
